New Rules Ban Vapers From Bringing E-cigs in Checked Baggage

It’s official: it will soon be illegal to bring electronic cigarettes and vape mods in your checked baggage when you fly.  While this might seem like needless backlash against our right to vape, there have actually been several occasions when vapes overheated and caused small fires on planes. Don’t worry, this does not mean you can’t bring your vape to your next vacation spot, it only means we have to be more careful with where and how we pack our items. Most airlines now allow passengers to have electronic cigarettes only in carry-on bags or on their person, but they do not allow them to be used while in flight.

The new rule will be put into effect within the next two weeks, at which point you’ll have to keep your vape in your carry-on, and you still won’t be allowed to charge it on the plane. Charging your battery on the airplane is one of the reasons why these unfortunate instances have been happening. Spare lithium batteries must be carried in your carry don bag. Other batteries may be put in a checked bag if it is packed appropriately. You may want to review your airline's rules before packing for your flight just to be sure of their own private regulations. We also recommend that you separate the battery from the device to reduce the potential for overheating hazards.

How can you travel with your electronic cigarette and accessories while being safe?

  • Switch your device off.
  • Remove the battery from the device.
  • Keep all your equipment and accessories with you in your carry-on baggage.
