Vape Snapshot: VooPoo Rex 80W Starter Kit

The VooPoo Rex 80W & UForce Tank Starter Kit is a smaller box mod that offers a lot of power for a single battery system. If you’ve never tried a device with a sub-ohm tank before, this would be a good first device to start on.

The Rex/UForce combo maxes out the potential of a single high-drain 18650 cell and offers various helpful features. Rex can deliver up to 80W of power for massive clouds, while the UForce tank holds up to 3.5 ml of liquid.

Design

When it comes to single battery devices, the VooPoo Rex is ergonomically crafted, fitting comfortably in your hand. With a variety of different solid colors (black, white, red, blue, orange, dark cyan, olive) and a stainless steel construction, these devices have an appealing retro-like design. Additionally, it comes with two types of tank glass allowing for straight or bubbled sides, the straight glass gives the tank a 3.5 ml capacity while adding the bubble bumps the storage up to 5 ml. Each feels different in your hand and this versatility adds appeal to the design.

Battery

The VooPoo Rex uses a single 18650 battery, which can deliver anywhere from 5W to 80W of power, with a voltage output of 0-7.5V. This is an industry standard, as most single-18650 devices have 80W as the cap on their output. This device will drain the battery pretty quickly at the upper end of the range, so expect to have to recharge frequently if you're pushing much harder than half capacity.

Coils

This starter kit comes with two coils. When you unbox the kit, the 0.4ohm UForce U2 Dual Coil will already be installed. This dual coil is best used for 55-65W output. For more powerful usage, you can try the included 0.13ohm UFORCE N1 Mesh Coil. This coil is best used if you’re vaping higher wattage, and is recommended for 70-80W - give them both a try and pick your favorite before ordering replacements.

Other Features

There are a number of different features to check out on this device. It comes with a Gene chipset, which allows you to control your temperature and wattage output and is generally admired for its lack of lag time after pressing the fire button. In TC and power mode, it boasts 95 percent accuracy with regard to output readings.

Additionally, the UForce has three wide oval air holes to open or close by rotating the adjustable airflow ring. While a wide range of flow options are available, this tank is going to be most at home open halfway or more for direct-lung or restricted lung draws.

Drawbacks

While it offers a multitude of options built into the device, VooPoo’s user manual doesn’t offer a lot of help with regard to dialing in temperature control settings. If you’re not familiar with the chipset, the explanations given in the manual can be confusing. Another drawback is the limited battery life from a single 18650 cell, which is a tradeoff for the weight and size reduction over multi-cell mods.

Takeaway

Still, VooPoo’s Rex 80W Starter Kit is an excellent box mod. This might be best, however, if you’re familiar with your way around a Gene chipset and have used a UForce sub-ohm tank before - or if you're willing to learn.
