Beginner’s Guide to Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) VersusDirect-Lung (DL) Inhales

You know how to take a drag off your cigarette, but what about the different types of inhalation technique for your vape? Thankfully, you’ve given up smoking for the healthier alternative, but perhaps you aren’t sure what technique is right for you. Maybe you’ve heard the terms mouth-to-lung and direct-lung vaping, but you have no idea what they mean. Not to worry - there’s no right or wrong way to go about things; these two techniques are simply based upon personal needs and preferences.

What are Mouth-to-Lung Hits?

If you’re a smoker making the transition to vaping, you’ll probably prefer mouth-to-lung, or MTL, hits at first. This technique is essentially the same method you used to take drags of your cigarettes. Instead of inhaling the vapor right away, you’ll pull a bit into your mouth before you inhale, much like you’d do with cigarette smoke.

Most ex-smokers prefer to start with MTL because it’s a similar technique, and it makes the transition seem more familiar. If you’re a MTL vaper, you will most likely purchase e-liquids with higher nicotine strengths. This is to ensure that you begin at a similar level of nicotine intake to what you got from your cigarettes. These shorter, more concentrated puffs won’t produce large clouds, but keep the focus on flavor and nicotine.

Your vape mod for MTL hits will generally need 20 watts or less. Cigalike e-cigarettes, pod mods, and eGo-style sticks are a few different setups that cater more to MTL inhalation. Some upsides of MTL vaping include less consumption of e-juice and slower battery consumption, not to mention the portability of the MTL-specific devices.

What are Direct Lung Hits?

Direct-lung hits are exactly what they sound like: hits that are inhaled directly into your lungs. Instead of letting vapor accumulate in your mouth before inhaling, you simply inhale through your vape. These kinds of hits might be a little weird at first for ex-smokers, but many eventually learn to love DL inhalation.

Direct-lung hits provide a sensation that MTL hits don’t offer. With larger inhales, greater clouds, and even more intense flavor, DL hits are my preference, which is commonplace as you transition from smoking to full-time vaping. A couple things to remember if you’re new to DL hits: first, you’re going to consume more vapor, because you’re taking longer inhales and using a higher wattage. Second, it’s important to remember that you’re getting a greater intake of nicotine with DL hits, so it’s best to purchase lower nicotine level e-liquids. Bigger inhales equal more nicotine compared to MTL hits, so it makes sense to use a lower nicotine level to avoid nicotine sickness.

Vape mods for DL vaping offer wattages as low as 20 and as high as 300. Since these devices typically use more power, the battery will probably drain faster than one used for MTL vaping. You’re also going to burn through your juice faster, because larger vapor production requires more e-liquid. The advantages of DL hits are greater cloud production and intensified flavor.

There is No Right or Wrong Choice

Whether you choose mouth-to-lung or direct-lung vaping, there is no right or wrong choice. It’s all about personal preferences. With some mods, it’s possible to do a combination of both! Just make sure that you get a vape mod that’s right for your needs and enjoy! Happy vaping.
