How Frequently Should You Change Your Coil?

Vape maintenance is an important aspect of any vaper's lifestyle. The two main aspects of vape maintenance are making sure that both your batteries and coil are working in the vape system at an optimum level. In this article, we’re going to focus on coils.

Broadly speaking, changing your coil is like maintenance on anything else: the frequency of when you need to change it depends on how often you use it. Heavy vapers will need to change more frequently than if you vape casually. The important part is knowing yourself, knowing your habit, and knowing your vaping gear.

These are a few tips for monitoring yourself and getting into the habit of not only loving the act of vaping but taking care of the gear that allows you to get that cherished dose of nicotine.

Heavy Vapers

Generally, someone who chain vapes every day should change their vape coil every 5-7 days.

This may seem really frequent for someone who doesn’t vape much, but trust me you won’t regret it. In order to keep this frequency of maintenance, I find that the best way is to get into a weekly ritual. This ritualizing of action can vary depending on how you get your vaping coil.

If you’re like me then you’ve reserved a day during the week to get all your vaping equipment up to snuff. Personally, I’ve honed in on Thursday as my “vape maintenance” and “grocery shopping” day. Every Thursday I go to Breazy and order my next week’s vape coil (if needed, though buying in bulk can save you some money), along with my flavors and batteries if I need them. That way it’s in my mailbox and my coil is ready to be changed by Monday after a long weekend of vaping.

Similarly, if you have a local vape store that you enjoy visiting, it’s good to pick out a day so you can visit and get your weekly coil and liquid needs taken care of. The local deli on my corner sells vape coils, and if I ever forget to order my gear online and am desperate for a coil right then and there, I walk to the corner and pick it out. Unfortunately, everything is much more expensive there, so it’s not really worth going out every time I need something.

Moderate and Light Vapers

Vapers that consider themselves “moderate vapers,” or someone who might vape daily but doesn’t necessarily chain vape, should change their coil every 2 weeks. Someone who is a “light” vaper, or vapes sporadically can get away with changing the coils every 3 to 4 weeks.

If you are not a heavy vaper than it is much harder to ritualize your needs for vaping, although, by knowing when you need a new vape could come in handy. This is a topic that’s been widely discussed before at Breazy.

There are several signs that you need to change your coil. The most obvious is that there’s a burnt taste no matter what type of vape juice your using. This usually means that your wicking material has spoiled and it's time for a new coil. The second sign is that your e-juice tastes… off. This could be a lack of potency of the flavor or you simply just need to change your coil.

Keep in mind that, like everything else, coil maintenance is subjective - you'll have to tailor your replacement schedule to your individual needs. If you vape heavily-sweetened, dessert flavors, you might get much less mileage out of a coil than someone vaping lighter or fruity flavors. Likewise, different systems require different upkeep - you might find you get 50 ml of juice through one brand of coil, while another might vaporize 200 ml before it starts dying off.

This biggest indicator for when you should change your coil is by asking yourself a simple question: when’s the last time you changed it? If you can’t remember the last time you changed your coil, that’s probably a good indication that it’s time to change it.
