Making the Transition from Smoking to Vaping

 

Switching from cigarettes to a vape is something that I never thought would be possible for me. If you’re thinking about making the transition, you are not alone in your anxiety and concerns. Kicking cigarettes is tough, but it doesn’t have to be so difficult. There are plenty real concerns one might have when they are about to leave the world of smoking and enter into the vaping community.

I remember wondering how I would get through it. Although vaping is a substitute for cigarettes, E-cigs have a different feel than traditional cigarettes do, and it can also be complicated when you find yourself knee deep in different flavors, brands of juices, nicotine levels, tanks and mods, and coils! Vaping was intimidating to me and I know that I am not the only one. When you are choosing which pack of cigarettes to buy, you walk in, compare a couple different brands, and eventually stick to one or two kinds of packs. Walk into a vape shop and the options can leave your head spinning.

Besides the fact that vaping seems a lot more complicated than traditional cigarettes, I was also concerned with affordability, health and side effects, effectiveness in kicking cigarettes and lowering my nicotine intake while curbing my cravings, assistance with my anxiety (because that’s a huge reason I started smoking in the first place), and satisfaction and ease of use.

 

Affordability:

This is a common concern for anyone who is about to start vaping. Is it really going to be cheaper than cigarettes? Even if it was not a more cost effective choice, wouldn’t the potential health benefits outweigh the price? Considering the health benefits that I have found in transitioning, even if the cost was equal, I would still say: “Sign me up.”

The fact of the matter is, most smokers who transition to vaping will probably end up saving money if they are moderate to heavy smokers. Although vape products can add up quickly, they are an investment that will usually amount to less than you were spending on your weekly cost of cigarettes. Even as a lighter smoker, odds are you will still save money. If money is tight, there are plenty of ways to keep your vaping experience within your budget. In switching from cigarettes to a vape, you will most likely save money in the long run.

Health and Side Effects:

This was a big one for me. I already knew that cigarettes were bad for my health. But how could I be certain that switching to vaping would be healthier? Would it improve my sense of taste and smell? What about nicotine levels? Are there more harmful substances in E-liquids than in cigarettes?

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the topic of vapes and health concerns and the best thing that you can possibly do is to keep yourself educated. Even with the controversy, there seems to be a general consensus that vaping is still way healthier than cigarettes. Here are some of the benefits that I noticed when I switched from cigarettes to a vape:

  • Increased or return to normal sense of smell/taste
  • No more tobacco smell or stains
  • Less nicotine intake
  • Better lung capacity and breathing
  • No more coughing
  • I have more energy
  • No more heart palpitations

These are just a few of the pros to vaping. Once I kicked cigarettes and switched to a vape, my health saw many improvements. Not only that, cigarettes have chemicals and toxins that aren’t present in vape juice, such as tar. There are up to or over 4,000 chemicals present in cigarette smoke. You will eliminate many of these once you switch, and your body will thank you for it. If you still feel unsure about health concerns, do your own research.

Effectiveness in Nicotine Cravings and Curbing Nicotine Habits:

Obviously, it’s difficult for any smoker to cut down their nicotine levels. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance. But when I began vaping, it was easier for me to cut down my intake levels than I initially thought it would be. I began with a juice that was a near equivalent level to my normal smoking habits and used that for about two weeks, the third week I kicked it down a notch. I did the same thing the next two to three weeks until I reached a level that I was comfortable with. It seems like a difficult task, but with a bit of strong will and the fact that you’re still getting the oral satisfaction of smoking, it beats chewing nicotine gum or using patches any day.

Vapes are great for people who wish to quit smoking altogether, as they do help you taper down nicotine levels and plateau at a comfortable spot until you are ready to move down a notch. I have several friends who have completely kicked cigarettes, switched to vaping, and are now only smoking at 3mg, the lowest level of nicotine available in E-liquids aside from a 0mg, which contains no nicotine.

Will Vaping Help my Anxiety if I used Cigarettes for this Reason?:

The answer for me is yes, it absolutely did. Not everyone is equal, so you might not feel the same way, but if you began smoking cigarettes to curb your anxiety, switching to vaping isn’t all that different. You still get the same sensation of breathing and inhaling, especially if you choose to start with mouth to lung inhalation, which is the same technique that is used when smoking traditional cigarettes. I have found however, that taking direct lung hits, which means a deeper hit that produces larger clouds, is actually more helpful when I am feeling anxious. So, in this way, vaping helps any anxiety more than cigarettes did, because I am taking deeper, more concentrated breaths. Again, this one is a personal opinion, and everyone is different. Certainly, if you struggle with anxiety this is not an excuse or reason to pick up cigarette smoking or even vaping for that matter, but there are plenty of individuals who have relied on a form of smoking to distract themselves. If you are one of those people who already smoke, and began to for the sake of your anxiety, then switching to vaping can help you kick the cigarettes without going cold turkey, and which is turn can help you learn how to cope with anxiety symptoms on your own once you stop relying on smoking.

Satisfaction and Ease of Use:

This is probably one of the most common complaints or concerns that I have heard from friends, family members, and coworkers about taking the leap and switching to vaping. It is far less complicated to pull out a cigarette and light it, but the benefits of vaping, plus the custom options that are available are well worth making the switch. You don’t have to start out with a complicated custom mod with all the bells and whistles. You can work your way into customization. Once you do, vaping can be a lot less boring than cigarettes, with a ton of stylistic options as well as flavor choices. A lot of people don’t like the idea of having to charge your vape either, but once you’re in the habit, it isn’t as big of a deal as it sounds.

 

There many concerns that smokers have when they are considering making the switch from cigarettes to vaping, but most of these are easily answered and remedied. Vaping is better for your health than cigarettes, easier on your wallet, and if you embrace the broad options that vaping offers, it can end up being a lot more satisfying than cigarettes too.
