Safety 101: How to Vape in a Pet Friendly Home
We always stress safety here at Breazy, as we believe the vaping world at large would be wise to do. From proper resistance to wattage and battery precautions, safety is always at the forefront. When it comes to vaping and pets, things are no different.
You don’t have to be a new pet owner to know that Fluffy and Fido like to get into everything. Exploration and discovery is natural to our furry friends. However, when it comes to vaping, curiosity can literally kill the cat. As a vape user, it’s your responsibility to make sure that your e-liquid and mod aren’t accessible to your pets.
The topic of pet safety is very important, but there are some easy ways you can still enjoy vaping while living in a pet-friendly home.
While most e-liquid bottles are childproof, this doesn’t mean that your puppy’s sharp teeth can’t puncture them, and just a drop of sweet-smelling juice on the outside of the cap can provide all the temptation a dog needs. In addition to your vape device and other spare hardware, be sure to store bottles where your pets cannot reach them. Failure to do so can expose your pets to nicotine, which can be harmful to animals as well as humans in excess. If ingested, symptoms of nicotine poisoning can present themselves in as little as an hour. The most telling signs include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and seizures. If you think your pet may have tampered with your e-liquid or mod it’s better to be safe than sorry. Call your vet or the Poison Help Line at (800) 213-6680.
It’s better to vape away from pets. You don’t want to blow clouds in your cat's face. One, it isn’t very polite, and two, the nicotine isn’t good for them. Whether nicotine or CBD, vape away from your pets. You wouldn’t blow clouds in your friend's face, so why do it to your pets? Vapor may cause irritation to the skin of cats and dogs. In addition to vaping away from your pets, be sure to vape away from their food and water. Nicotine is harmful to animals and you do not want to transfer the nicotine from your liquid or vapor to their skin or food bowls for them to ingest - even though current studies are largely inconclusive, there’s no reason to take unnecessary risks. Read more about it here. The sweet smelling and tasting vape liquid flavors can be appealing to animals, so you can’t expect your pets to stay away from you when you vape.Often they will want to be near you while you vape. Dogs are especially notorious for this. They are playful by nature, and vape clouds seem like a great toy to them. It is up to you to make their safety your priority, and practice proper precautions.
Keep your charging devices away from your pets. The last thing you want is to plug your device into charge with a chewed chord you didn’t notice. That’s just asking for trouble. Charge devices in a separate room from your pets, or up where they can’t reach them. The power needed to charge your device running through the cord can seriously injure your pet if they get a shock from chewing the cord. In cats, a single shock from a cord can cause pulmonary edema, a condition where the lungs become overpowered with fluid. The onset can be sudden in cases of electric shock, and if caught quickly can be treated, but there is no cure.
Just like battery safety, pet safety should be a strong priority for all vape users. Knowing which precautions to take, and how to seek out assistance in worse case scenarios is key to keeping yourself and your furry friends happy.
